Fiber Media Converter Chassis Troubleshooting

Quick answer

Troubleshooting common chassis problems including alarms, a stopped fan or loss of power to all modules.

Symptoms

  • Rack power indicator is red or an audible alarm sounds
  • Power indicator is off and the fan is stopped
  • Power indicator is normal but the fan is stopped
  • All media converter indicators in the chassis are off

Applicability and checks before use

For media converter chassis with a separate rack power supply, fans and alarm indicators. Power modules, redundancy arrangements, fuses and hot-swap capability depend on the model; follow its chassis manual.

Troubleshooting steps

  1. Red indicator or alarm

Record the alarm state, number of modules and time of failure. Check for signs of an external short circuit or abnormal load. If there are unusual smells, overheating or a possible short circuit, disconnect the input supply and contact maintenance personnel.

  2. Indicator is off and the fan is stopped

Check the AC input, outlet and power cable first. If the input is normal and the fault remains, have qualified personnel check the power module using the model-specific service procedure. Do not dismantle energized equipment or substitute a fuse of a different rating.

  3. Fan is stopped or all modules lose power

A normal power indicator does not rule out a fan, power-connection or module fault. Preserve the site condition and photographs, then contact technical support. Do not replace internal fans or reconnect internal power wiring while energized on the basis of a general article.

How to confirm recovery

After the permitted maintenance procedure, the chassis power, cooling and module states meet the corresponding manual, the alarm has cleared and the actual links have recovered.

If the issue remains

Record the full model, hardware/firmware version, power arrangement, wiring topology, time of failure and indicator states, then contact technical support. Do not include passwords in public messages.
