Quick answer
Troubleshooting camera disconnections, packet loss, night-time outages and unstable video on some PoE switch ports.
Symptoms
- Some cameras lose video after a period of operation
- Ethernet indicator is off and the camera has no image
- Cameras work by day but disconnect or lose packets at night
Applicability and checks before use
For initial checks of power and link faults involving PoE switches and cameras. Confirm standard PoE versus non-standard power methods, voltage, available power and port capabilities in the exact model specifications and manual.
Troubleshooting steps
Check the power budget and compatibility
Check the total PoE budget, each port limit and each camera maximum power consumption. Confirm that power negotiation and the power method are compatible. Check total and per-port limits separately; estimated consumption does not replace the published model ratings.
Isolate cables and devices by segment
After confirming the service impact, isolate individual connections and compare with known-good compliant cables, ports and compatible devices. Determine whether the fault follows the cable, port or camera. A camera that communicates when powered separately narrows the possibilities but does not by itself prove that the entire switch is faulty.
For night-time faults, check peak load
Check the power required when infrared illumination, supplementary lighting or other loads start, together with the PoE budget and the quality of the power-carrying cables and connections. Night-time disconnections can also involve links or end devices; timing alone does not prove insufficient supply power.
Confirm compatibility before replacing a power supply
Use a supply that meets the voltage, connector, polarity, power and certification requirements allowed for the exact model. Do not select a replacement solely because it has a higher wattage. Contact technical support if the fault continues.
How to confirm recovery
At the actual maximum service load and relevant night-time operating conditions, port power and links meet the model requirements, cameras remain online and video is stable.
If the issue remains
Record the full model, hardware/firmware version, power arrangement, wiring topology, time of failure and indicator states, then contact technical support.
